Mr. Tanveer Ahmed assumed charge of his position at SAARC Secretariat on 16 September 2020.

Mr. Tanveer Ahmed is a career diplomat who joined Pakistan Foreign Service in 2006. Prior to his appointment at the Secretariat, he was serving as Counsellor at Embassy of Pakistan, Kuwait.

He started his career at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad as Assistant Chief of Protocol in the State Protocol Department. Proceeded to Damascus in December 2009 on first assignment abroad. Subsequently, served as Deputy Head of Mission at Embassy of Pakistan, Sofia, Bulgaria from August 2011 to December 2014 and Rome, Italy from August 2016 to October 2019. During his posting at Embassy of Pakistan, Rome, he also worked as Alternate Permanent Representative of Pakistan to International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT). In between, he served as Director (Europe) at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad for about two years (December 2014 to August 2016).

Holds Bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science from Punjab University, Lahore and Master’s degree in History from the same institution.

Mr. Ahmed is married with two kids.
