Your Excellency Mr. Mohamad Nasheed, President of the Republic of Maldives and Chairperson of the Seventeenth SAARC Summit
Hon. Heads of State and Government
Excellencies,
Distinguished Delegates,
Representatives of Observers to SAARC,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
1. I propose to begin by celebrating the richness of our culture and our language, so allow me, Mr. Chairman to say a line of greeting in Dhivehi. “Aadhe, Dhivehi Rajjeyge Addu City ga, kuriah hingamun midhaa Saarc Sammit ah, thiya enmehaa beyfulhunnah marhaba: adhi alhuganduge maifuna bimun mi bayaan hushahelhumuge furusath libene kamee varah bodo ufalah kamugai dhannavan”.

The President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, His Excellency Mr. Hamid Karzai; the Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina; the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bhutan, His Excellency Lyonchhen Jigmi Yoeser Thinley; the Prime Minister of the Republic of India, His Excellency Dr. Manmohan Singh; the President of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Nasheed; the Prime Minister of Nepal, His Excellency Dr. Baburam Bhattarai; the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, His Excellency Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani; and the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, His Excellency Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa met in Addu City, the Maldives, on 10-11 November 2011 for the Seventeenth Summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

The Seventeenth Summit was held from 10-11 of November 2011 in Addu City, Maldives. The Meeting, which was held at the Equatorial Convention Centre, Addu City was opened by the outgoing Chair of SAARC, Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Bhutan, H.E.Lyonchhen Jigmi Yoezer Thinley.

The Thirty-Fourth Session the Council of Ministers was held in Addu City, Maldives on 9 November 2011. H.E. Mr. Ahmed Naseem, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, was elected as Chairperson of the Council. The Council considered the Periodic Analytical Report of the Secretary General as contained in and commended the Secretary General of SAARC for her comprehensive Report on the progress of activities and achievements of the Association since the Thirty-third Session of the Council of Ministers.
