The SAARC Gender database has been set up as a joint initiative of the seven member countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. It is not to be looked at as any other statistical database based on traditional indicators alone. It is to include both tangible and intangible primary indicators to be identified after careful study. Database is not for the purpose of dissemination of gender data only and has a much greater role for policy advocacy on burning gender issues, data has to be tabulated, analyzed, addressed for policy advocacy and be monitored on a continuous basis. Analysis of the datasets of the proposed gender database should also be able to produce the following outputs:

a) Generation of a comprehensive report on the Progress of South Asian Women
b) Tabulation of existing empowerment strategies along with their impact for determination of future strategies more effectively
c) Analysis of good practices to empower women and end gender discrimination
